PHASE TWO: WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?
Now that you have looked at P.L. Dunbar's thoughts on why we wear masks, let's see if his theory is
correct. For this part of the task, you will need paper to write down answers, in a free-form style (in other words-
do not worry about paragraphs, punctuation or that stuff, the important thing here is the thoughts and ideas you have) and
a pen. As you read each prompt, write for as long as you can (limit of 1 page per prompt). These
writings will be used as the foundation for the next part of the process.
a) When was a time that you pretended to feel one way but
inside you really did not. Tell about it in detail.
b) When is it easiest to 'put on a mask' instead of showing the
true feelings and why do you think this is?
c) What are the benefits of 'wearing masks'?
d) What harm is there in 'wearing masks'?
e) Finally, list as many masks you have worn and what they hid.
PHASE 3: UNMASKED!
Now that you have spent time looking at your own struggle with wearing masks, I want you to share bits of what
you have discovered with others. Using whatever mediums you want (ie.. markers, paint, paper, paper maiche, etc...) you
are to create a VISUAL representation of the masks you are most comfortable wearing. In other words, you will need to
create a mask and on the mask should be various visual clues as to what the mask is for. Use your imagination and creativity
for this!
After creating the visual mask, you will need to write about what it is you have created! You
will need to write a 5 paragraph essay about the mask. Don't forget that you should have a strong introduction
and conclusion and that the meat of the paper should be SHOWING and not just TELLING the reader about the mask. Be sure
to check out the evaluation rubric in the 'evaluation' section of this site. We will display the masks throughout the
room so be sure to put time and effort into these as well. The evaluation rubric for the masks is also found in the
'evaluation' section of this site.
PHASE 4: IDENTIFYING
WRITING GENRES
The success of Tears
of a Tiger is not just the story but the way in which the story is told. During our pre-reading assignment, you
generated a list of genres found in this novel. You will need to dig that out and use it for this section.
If you are unable to locate it, then quickly go back to the book and list the different genres Draiper writes in to communicate
her story. Looking over the list, pick 4 of the genres that stood out to you and put a star by them. Once you
have done that, you will need to go the following sites and for each genre you have put a star next to, answer the
following:
a) What is the benefit of this writing genre?
b) What are the drawbacks of this writing genre?
c) What do I like about this genre of writing?
d) What do I not like about this genre of writing?
